Willington occurs as pit town inside County Durham, in the foothills of the Pennines and near a River Wear. These are or so Crook and Bishop Auckland. A colliery closed in 1967 and the town has however non fully recovered. A Labour Party is very strong on text, & around the 2003 council elections, Labour won 82% of the vote in Willington. Willington is section of Wear Valley council, and Durham North West parliamentary constituency.
